A Southern Sister in the Philippines

Daily writing prompt
Share a story about the furthest you’ve ever traveled from home.

My first assignment in the Air Force was at Camp O’Donnell in the Philippines. Each day I traveled to a worksite a few miles away…Crow Valley. We would travel through a village and cross a river to get to work. I can still hear the kids calling…”Lady Joe, Lady Joe.” I was the second female to be assigned to Camp O’Donnell and the guys were still joking about the first one they ran away. Eighteen months later, several would apologize at how they treated me when I invaded their world. It was the worst work assignment I’ve ever had, but I was glad I didn’t allow them to run me away. I was a pretty good radar tech and a snappy little African American southern belle…I did it!

Congratulations on your success in resisting and overcoming the hazing of being precious, fresh/new/novel, and rare . . . as you surely then were and likely still are.

Thank you for taking the time to land this to the page and allow us read it.

    Be well.
