I’ve been listening to the pundits, nervous Never Trumpers, Democrats and Independents wringing their hands over a ninety-minute debate, but clearly there is only one choice for America…the former President cannot return to the presidency, and neither can his cohorts in crime. Trump cannot return and neither can the GOP legislators who worship and/or fear him…none of them can return to power. America would end as we know it (at least temporarily); it would be a setback for our democracy or democratic republic–whichever term you choose. Former President Trump brought us so close on January 6th, actually prior to that as he tried to change the outcome of the Georgia election but thanks to the integrity of Republicans, such as, Rusty Bower in Arizona and Brad Raffensberger Georgia his efforts to steal the election were unsuccessful. And yet, thanks to the conservative members of the Supreme Court, that integrity might be overshadowed by the president’s actions receiving their blessing.
People are debating between two men who are as different as night and day. One has been lying since the day he showed up and has shown us as bright as the morning sun that he has no moral compass…it is clear we don’t know who he is, just that he admires America’s worst enemies and often gives in to his worst demons. One has been working for America from the day he showed up, he’s not perfect and he’s certainly lost a step or two (both have)…but it is clear he loves America and clear to anyone not wearing Trump-colored glasses that he’s working for all of us, and his record is proof.
But the choices reach far beyond these two men…one cannot look over the role of Congress. The President is certainly important in that he or she sets the tone for the administration and has the power to veto. They not only possess the power to veto, but to sign, what gets to their desks. It is the super potent Congress that determines what lands in front of them. One of the things that worries me most is the Commander in Chief role…how can a man who doesn’t believe in, appreciate, or respect the military, lead the military?
Speaking of the super-potent Congress, Democrats have consistently fought for any legislation securing the future of Social Security, Medicare, affordable and safe healthcare, job creation, infrastructure integrity, food security, affordable childcare and housing, our foreign allies, workplace safety, freedom of the press and religion, inalienable rights, civil rights, women’s rights, reproductive rights, paying fair share of taxes, strengthening and growing the middle-class, immigration reform, peaceful protest, common-sense gun laws, etc.…you get my gist. All of these things are about everyday life issues for all of us. Today, the majority of Republican elected officials are not concerned with preserving any of these issues. One simply has to look at where Republicans in Congress have voted on all of these issues…and where Democrats have voted.
I pray President Biden is healthy and wins this election. Unlike the former President, Biden has surrounded himself with competent people who know what they are doing or at the very least are attempting to do the best thing for the country. They are not his family and wealthy friends with little experience in their appointed areas or primarily trying to do the best for their families and wealthy friends. That said, there is no guarantee that either of these men, or anyone, will last a full term. What I am sure of is that one will leave an Administration behind that is competent, believes in America, all of its people, and the Constitution, and will protect America’s interests with all their might because that is the legacy we see President Biden building. Look at their record…they are all working to rebuild what the former President and his Administration left behind.
