Patriotism is Action Not Just Words

Daily writing prompt
Are you patriotic? What does being patriotic mean to you?

Patriotism is being of service to your country…making it better. I don’t believe it means reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, it means living it. You don’t have to run out and join the military, but one should recognize the sacrifice of those who serve and their families. I think patriotism is wanting every person to have a fair chance of attaining the American Dream within the parameters of the law and without leaving eighty percent of the country behind. I believe being patriotic is voting to ensure our citizens are safe and healthy, ensuring we protect our precious democracy, ensuring every person is treated equally under our laws, ensuring those who are able-bodied have work, ensuring our environment supports all of us today and tomorrow, ensuring we continue to teach others how to thrive in their countries, ensuring America and our people can thrive regardless of their religion, their race, their gender,…and a lot of other flowery stuff. The truth is I just want our country to continue to be the country people flee to, and not the country people flee from. I am amazed by the vastness and beauty of our country when you leave the city. The miles and miles of land and trees…amazed at the possibilities. It is a land of dreams…but it is up to us to love it enough to make it more than about just me personally.
