Love Thy Neighbor

Daily writing prompt
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

It seems our country is engulfed in hateful culture wars seemingly stemming from the powerful voices of powerful people in this country. I think it is more so stemming from prejudices deep in their hearts and these powerful and public influences just gave them permission to act. I am sure some just got caught up in the hatred of those in their circle, but we have been at this long enough for those people to have righted themselves.

My grandmothers were the most loving and kind women in the world. I never heard either of them say anything mean and hateful to or about anyone. I never saw them treat anyone with anything but respect. They both grew up and lived in a time and place where people of color were regularly treated as less than…not only them but their loved ones. And yet, they found some way for their daily lives to be guided by forgiveness and love. They taught me those lessons…and I embraced them.

That doesn’t mean that the wrongs go unnoticed or unaddressed; it means there is a respectful and in order approach to all things…something many of our folks in Congress have not learned. My grandmothers addressed the wrongs that were hurtled their way in their time as well, they just did so in a loving, honest, and respectful way. There were many stories to be told about those times.

In these days I find solace in speaking, and writing and helping others to remember that we can perfect this union respectfully. We just have to remember we’re all on this planet together…and how we love and respect one another will define our future.
