The One’s Who Give Back

Daily writing prompt
Name the professional athletes you respect the most and why.

There are many, but I will list just a few in our recent times. Being a Black female, I’m going to list the ones that jump out at me first. Serena Williams has sacrificed career records to be an example for all women and girls. I know this mainly because Billie Jean King commented about her many ventures that affected her ability to win more matches, such as, having “a business, a baby and trying to help gender equity, particularly for women of color.” For more than 30 years Magic Johnson’s foundation has developed programs and supported community-based organizations that address the education, health, and social needs of ethnically diverse, urban communities…he also has a great track record for starting businesses in communities where other will not. Lebron James has often given his voice and his money impact education, voter rights and inequality. Tiger Woods gives back by bringing the game of golf to inner city kids, and founded the TGR foundation that provides scholarships to those in need. In the wake of the murder of George Floyd, Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid and more than 100 other NHL players made statements denouncing racial inequality, acknowledging their privilege and pledging to learn and do better…and, many donated dollars to the effort. Colin Kaepernick kneeled and sacrificed his NFL career to bring attention to protest police brutality and racial inequities. I could go on for hours naming names, but many of our professional athletes give back…and I admire each and every one of them. Most are far more than just professional athletes.
