Yesterday was a good day! People who should have stood up earlier, stood up yesterday! Others will join today! More will stand up tomorrow! Let’s chat about where we are, where we’ve been and where we’re going.
There are people who do not believe in God, or maybe they believe in God or a higher power, just not traditional constructs. Some believe in God but haven’t bought into every single line in the doctrine of their specific religion…after all man had a hand in the publishing. And then there are those folks who, without any doubt, just believe. We cannot forget about those who for now or perhaps forever are put simply…undecided.
Most who believe and even those who don’t, believe certain tenets help us live in civil society…don’t lie, don’t steal, don’t kill, love thy neighbor, don’t covet another’s partner, don’t pull on Superman’s cape, and don’t mess around with Jim, etc. Freedom of religion is such a precious thing.
I remember when our superheroes were Superman, Atom Ant, our parents, and grandparents; and being rude and humiliating people were not superpowers. I remember when we trusted doctors and scientists to provide the fruit of their studies to make health decisions…we trusted them to save lives and when they misbehaved, their licenses were revoked. I remember when the office of President of the United States was respected and when they were not good at the job, voters sent them packing…and they went packing.
I remember when a soldier who made it home from war even if we didn’t support the war was a hero, and those who didn’t make it home were even bigger heroes. I remember when dictators were not admired. I remember when our nation mourned the death of four little black girls bombed in a Birmingham church, the world entire world mourned. I remember when Dr. Martin Luther King received the Nobel Peace Prize.
I remember when Americans longed for better days, not yesterday…a better America, not the good old days. We battled for the America we have…this imperfect little powerhouse of a democracy. We’ve come a long way baby—the good, the bad, and the ugly—and we are not going back!
