Republicans are Not on Our Side

Utah’s Republican Senator Mitt Romney has a book coming that will allege there are Republicans who no longer believe in our Constitution, are dishonest, and cowards. We didn’t need a book to tell us that. All one has to do is look at their actions. It isn’t hidden; it’s not covert. It’s slapping us in the face that Republican lawmakers have abandoned America and the majority of Americans.

We have a Republican Senator from Alabama who has been in office for only three years holding up military promotions…and he’s been doing so for more than six months.  Military leaders who have years of experience are briefing the world on the damage his action is doing to our military. Meanwhile, China is strengthening their military and seeking stronger alliances…and his fellow Republican lawmakers are watching as if this is a Marvel action movie—popcorn and all. Whose side are they on?

We have the House moving forward with an impeachment inquiry on the President (with no shared evidence) while we are fighting back forces attacking democracy across the waters, battling back a recession, recovering from the lingering ramifications of COVID that the entire world is experiencing, dealing with the numerous weather disasters in the country (they exist regardless of whether or not one believes in climate change), while doing little to avert a looming shutdown of our government.  Actually, some members are screaming for a shutdown, knowing the credit rating of the US has already been downgraded because of their previous posturing on the debt ceiling.  Whose side are they on?

On top of all of that we have a former President and 2024 candidate who is governing from the sidelines, and he has soldiers in Congress who are obeying his orders.  They are loud, they have power, they are threatening, and they are willing to do his bidding.  This is aside from the fact the former President has indictments in states as well as federal charges, has been fined millions in civil action for what a judge described as rape, and has several supporters who have been sentenced and imprisoned for attacking the White House on January 6th.   Whose side are they on?

Former President Donald Trump’s signature legislation was the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Many of the provisions in that law are set to expire in 2025…the pieces expiring are the cuts for regular working folks.  The provisions for corporations do not sunset. Republicans refuse deal with the tax provisions of the wealthy and corporations. Whose side are they on?

Four Democrats broke ranks to vote with Republicans in a vote on a Democratic House bill designed to clamp down on price gouging by oil and gas companies amid the nationwide surge in the cost of fuel. The bill passed in the House with a narrow vote.  The bill died in the Senate Committee and was never voted upon in the full Senate where it was doomed to fail because it would need ten Republican votes.  Whose side are they on?

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 which aimed to curb inflation by reducing the federal government budget deficit, lowering prescription drug prices, and investing into domestic energy production while promoting clean energy was passed in the House along party lines with no Republicans voting for it.  Whose side are they on?

Only 13 House Republicans and 19 Senators voted for the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs II Act, more commonly known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill.   Whose side are they on?

I could go on and on with examples.   Perhaps the more important question is, whose side are the American voters on?
